In letter 13 on groundless fears, the stoic philosopher Seneca provides advice on how to tackle these mental hardships. After all, “we suffer more often in imagination than reality” according to him. There are three big tips Seneca offers: 1) Challenge these thoughts using reason, 2) Use hope to temper the fear, and 3) Try to imagine that the thing you fear may actually be beneficial for you.
Tip number one is the most interesting since it very closely resembles the therapy known as cognitive behavioral therapy. This form of therapy focuses on challenging negative thoughts in order to eventually limit your belief in them. Critically examining your fears, likewise, may help you deal with those fears by breaking them down. #philosophy #stoicism #anxiety
